From my eyes there are several ways to create a compelling identity. One way, which I will always do first is go right into Adobe Illustrator and create the skeleton of a logo. Sometimes this can be attractive enough depending on your company but there are times when the skeleton of the logo is just too dull. When that happens no need to worry because I can do tons of special effect work in my favorite program Photoshop! Below is an illustration of what I mean. Left is vector and right is raster, in other words, left would be corporate and right would be creative.

As you can tell from the examples above change can make all the difference. But there is a slight disadvantage while using raster effects on a logo. Vector stays 100% quality no matter what size you scale it to while raster looses quality the more you scale it. Don't worry though because when I use raster effects on logos I create them at print quality so quality will still remain top notch even if you decide to print it out. I save quality by making the image a few thousand by a few thousand pixels.

If you have a previous logo and say its at horrible quality like 200x150 (and you have no higher quality substitutes) I am able to reproduce it into vector format so you are able to make it anysize x anysize. Another good thing about reproducing it is you will be able to do a lot more with it such as change color or add effects.
